WO1 Eik
Old trees are very important 'furniture' in our landscape: they are silent witnesses to human history: in its good, but also in its destructive nature. We have here an old oak that survived the First World War. The top of the tree was shot off, only part of the trunk remained, but it recovered. However, it now displays an atypical shape for an oak. He no longer stands upright, but his crown is low to the ground ... He is forever - like knoteik - scarred by that war. A permanent scar in the landscape. So the oak is at least 100 years old. It became a symbol for the revival of our region: In Flanders Fields. Like the tree, our region was destroyed, just like the tree, our region recovered. However, many scars are still legible in our landscape to the trained eye. That oak is one of them, or how a scar can all in all also be beautiful and healing!
