At the mouth of the Steenbergse Vliet, the lock complex Benedensas is the perfect place to take a break. Since 1824, the locks have protected the land behind against high water from the Volkerak. They also bridged the height difference between low and high tide for shipping. The lock is called Benedensas because it is located at the lower reaches of the Vliet, in contrast to the Bovensas. When the Philipsdam cut off the Volkerak from the Eastern Scheldt, the locks of Benedensas lost their function. But the atmosphere is pleasant, the historical value great and tea is almost always ready in the ferry house. You can also enjoy the beautiful view of the Bunkertreppe. Reason enough for a nice stopover.
