Fort Pinssen in Bergen op Zoom protected the inundation area around Halsteren. That made it an important link in the West Brabant Waterline, the chain of forts, trenches and inundation areas between Bergen op Zoom and Steenbergen. This also included Fort de Roovere in Bergen op Zoom and Fort Moermont in Bergen op Zoom. In the 17th century, it was very busy here with all that clatter of weapons. Fort Pinssen Bergen op Zoom is therefore named after Colonel Willem Pijnssen (Pinssen) van der Aa. During the construction, the Staatsen entrusted him with protection against the enemy. Fort Pinssen closed in 1816 and became an oasis of peace. In the two centuries that Fort Pinssen Bergen op Zoom is now out of use, plants and shrubs have taken over the fort. The fort is not public, but can be viewed from around. Thanks to a restoration, the contours of Fort Pinssen can still be seen.
