Begijnhof Diksmuide
The beguinage was built in the 13th century behind the city canals. During the construction of the fortifications in the 15th century, the beguinage was placed within a new city wall. In this way the Beguines could anchor themselves within urban life and develop into an economically independent community. After the First World War 1914-1918, the Begijnhof was rebuilt, but the last Beguines did not return.
