Wodanseik bij het Wylerbergmeer

The most famous descendant of the Koekkoek family of painters is Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (Middelburg, 1803 - Cleves, 1862). He was the son of marine painter Johannes Hermanus Koekoek and he grew up in Middelburg, where he also attended the drawing academy. Later he studied in Amsterdam. Unlike his father, he mainly painted landscapes. His paintings have a romantic character in which light plays an important role. Koekkoek traveled a lot. He became so captivated by the nature around Cleves that he settled there and founded a drawing college. Koekkoek lived in Beek near Nijmegen for a year around 1828. This painting is based on a view of Lake Wylerberg. The Duivelsberg can be seen in the left background. This work can be seen until September 23, 2018 in Gelderland Grensland, an exhibition at CODA Museum Apeldoorn that brings together landscape painting from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. An excellent opportunity to travel through the province of Gelderland on the basis of masterpieces from four centuries of art history! www.coda-apeldoorn.nl/gg Image: Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Wodanseik along 'Het Meertje' (Wylerbergmeer) in Beek near Nijmegen, 1840, oil on canvas, private collection, formerly Simonis & Buunk, Ede
