Gezicht op Hattem

Hattem is the northernmost city in Gelderland, located between the IJssel and Kampen in Overijssel. Jan Voerman (Kampen, 1857 - Hattem, 1941) lived there from 1889 until his death. He often painted the city on the river and for that reason is also called the 'IJssel painter'. This work provides a view of Hattem from the Hoenwaard. At the end of the fourteenth century, a dike was built along a large part of the IJssel. This IJsseldijk ended at Hattem because the Hoenwaard (\\\ 'hoen' means 'high') was a higher situated area and already bordered the IJssel. Jan Voerman was born in Kampen and learned to paint and draw at the academies of Amsterdam and Antwerp. During his studies Voerman already went with his friend Jan Verkade to his native soil to paint the landscape. At first he worked mainly in watercolor, but around the turn of the century Voerman switched to oil paint. However, he is constantly looking for the changing moods of the landscape to capture the endless color variations. This work can be seen until September 23, 2018 in Gelderland Grensland, an exhibition at CODA Museum Apeldoorn that brings together landscape painting from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. An excellent opportunity to travel through the province of Gelderland on the basis of masterpieces from four centuries of art history! www.coda-apeldoorn.nl/gg Image: Jan Voerman, Bank of the IJssel near Hattem, 1867, brush in watercolor and body paint in colors, on loan from the Rijksmuseum; bequest of Mr. and Mrs. Drucker-Fraser, Montreux
