Beresteijn was founded in 1828 when the southwestern part of the Berbice estate was sold to Jhr. Hugo van Beresteyn. He had a modest country house built along the Leidseweg with a water feature in front. Behind the house, the forest was laid out as a landscape garden. In 1893 the estate was sold and a boys' boarding school was established. The house was renovated and got the current facade in neo-renaissance style. During the Second World War the institute was closed and the country estate sold again. It has subsequently been used by various religious communities as a monastery, among other things. The house has not been inhabited for a long time now. The current owner Amvest wants to restore the park forest in the coming years through the development of (care) homes and restore the special places in the area and make them visible again.
