Nature reserve
Natuurgebied Zig
The Zig is a well-known walking area and lies between the channels of the Lossing canal and the Abeek river. Around 1950 nature was drained here for the planting of poplars. The old landscape of ponds with strong reed edges has been restored in recent years. The area excels in the great wealth of birds and insects such as dragonflies. A propeller blade of an English warplane from the Second World War was found during the refurbishment of the Zig. The RAF plane crashed here on May 31, 1942 after being hit on its return from a bombing raid over Cologne. At the expense of his own life, pilot Leslie Manser was able to safely drop his crew. He himself crashed. As a monument, the propeller blade is a tribute to Manser and to the local population who were able to guide the crew safely back to England
