This Grace statue with a picture of Saint Mary in the Chapel of Grace is the reason that Kevelaer became a pilgrimage. Legend has it that in 1642 Mary appeared to the pedlar Hendrick Busman and ordered him to build a chapel for her at the crossroads of the roads to Geldern and Cleves. Later that century, people declared that they were healed after visiting the chapel and the statue.
