Church
Sint-Maria-Magdalenakerk
This Saint Mary Magdalene Church was founded in 1339 as a monastery church at the Carmelite monastery in Geldern. In the Second World War the church was destroyed to such an extent that it was completely rebuilt. During the works, the grave of the heiress of Gelre, Catharina van Egmont (1439-1497) was found. Catherine played an important role as regent of the duchy of Guelders between 1477 and 1479. During this period the Burgundian duke tried to incorporate Gelre. Despite the fact that Catharina had to cede some areas to the Burgundian duchy, she managed to keep Gelre out of Burgundian hands until her nephew, later Charles of Gelre, was old enough to be able to exercise his function as duke.
