Church

Laurentiuskerk

The Laurentius Church is nowadays a Catholic church, but that was not always the case. During the Eighty Years' War, this area became not only a land border, but also a faith border. The Laurentius Church has since often changed owners. In 1648 the church passed into the hands of the Reformed. The expelled pastor built a border church on this at the Sint-Jozefskapel in Smakt. In 1665, the reformed minister was expelled by the infamous Bishop of M? Nster, Bernhard von Galen. In 1672, the Disaster Year, the church came into the hands of the French, who renamed the building into a Catholic church. After the departure of the French in 1674, the church became Protestant again, until the church was returned to the Catholics in 1800.
