Because the dikes first built in the Zuiderzee offered insufficient protection against the water, the dikes were reinforced in various places with a pile construction from the 15th century onwards. Long rows of oak and / or coniferous wood poles were placed next to each other at the paendijk, which were mutually connected and anchored in the ground using cross beams.
