Tourist landmark
Haringvlietsluizen
The Haringvliet locks are located between the North Sea and the mouth of the Haringvliet. They regulate the water level in a way that is similar to opening or closing a tap. The locks are therefore known as the crane of Europe. The Haringvlietdam, containing the Haringvliet locks, protects against high water from the sea. The locks discharge a large part of the flow of Rhine and Meuse water to the North Sea. The flood defense was built between 1956 and 1970 and connects Goeree-Overflakkee with Voorne-Putten.
