De Zandmotor

The Sand Motor is located off the coast at Monster en Kijkduin. It is a mecca for kite surfers and you will also find many coastal and wading birds. With a bit of luck, a seal will also appear. The dunes at Ter Heijde are very narrow, which is why an artificial peninsula of 128 hectares was created in 2011, called the Sand Motor. From this hook-shaped sandbar, which protrudes a kilometer into the sea, no less than 21.5 million cubic meters of sand will drift towards the coast in the coming years. Wind, waves and currents do the work. By making optimal use of natural processes, 35 hectares of new beach and dunes will automatically be created here. This offers extra protection against rising sea levels and extra space for nature and recreation.
