Oude Rijn
The Oude Rijn was built in the early sixteenth century by Duke Charles of Gelre. It had to be a large canal and a connection between Wageningen and the Zuiderzee, but due to a lack of money it did not go much further than the construction of a small ditch. Duke Charles was involved in wars against, among others, the Habsburg Charles V and the Duchy of Cleves, which consumed all his money and time.
