Grebbeberg
On the other side of the river, towards Rhenen, you look at the Grebbeberg. This mountain played an important role in the defense of the Netherlands during the German invasion from 11 to 13 May 1940. A German army of about 23,000 men tried to break through the Grebbelinie at the Grebbeberg east of Rhenen. Heavy fighting took place for three days, after which the Dutch soldiers withdrew behind the New Dutch water line.
