Oude batterijen aan de Meerdijk
These batteries on the Meerdijk were part of the nineteenth-century New Dutch Waterline, which ran from the Zuiderzee to the Biesbosch. In the event of a threat of war, the waterline had to be flooded to protect the western Netherlands. With the advent of airplanes in World War II, this defense tactic had become obsolete.
