Hadwin & Stopher Memorial
The Hadwin & Stopher Memorial is a war memorial for four fallen English soldiers. At the end of September 1944, the southern Netherlands was liberated, but the Allies were stuck in the Bommelerwaard near the Maas. On October 26, 1944, John Raymond Hadwin, Reginald Stopher, Rowland Merrit and John William Walker were on patrol along with three other British soldiers. They were trying to reach Fort Sint Andries when they were ambushed. Hadwin and Stopher were fatally wounded and buried on the spot. Walker and Merrit died of their injuries a few days later. The remaining three soldiers managed to escape safely.
