Altaarsteen Rufia Materna

Here you can see a replica of the Roman altar stone Rufia Materna, which is currently on display in the center of Millingen aan de Rijn and dates back to the period when this part of Gelderland was part of the northern border of the Roman Empire: the limes. Rufia Materna was a local native priestess, but both the dating and origin of the stone are unclear. Rufia Materna is probably the result of a fusion of the Germanic and Roman religions, which was more common in the areas occupied by Romans.
