Schipperspoort

The Schipperspoort can be seen from Dorspsdijk 36. This gate is all that remains of the Tolhuys castle, which stood here until the seventeenth century. Count Gerard III van Gelre used the castle from 1222 to levy tolls on ships entering Gelre via the Rhine. In 1672 French troops destroyed the Tolhuys when they invaded the Netherlands under the leadership of Louis XIV and crossed the Rhine.
