Slot Ilpenstein

Ilpenstein Castle was built in 1622 by Volkert Overlander, mayor of Amsterdam, but also lord of Purmerland and Ilpendam. It was built like a castle, but it was in fact a country estate for a distinguished Amsterdam citizen. The most famous resident of Ilpenstein was Frans Banning Cocq, who, as captain of the Amsterdam militia, was given a prominent place in Rembrandt's painting The Night Watch. In 1872 the last resident, Christina Elisabeth de Graeff, died and the castle was sold and demolished.
