Monument van de Erkentelijkheid
In 1944, the Allies fought a three-week battle on the periphery around Antwerp. After the recapture of Antwerp, the Allied armies had a gateway for the supply of new war material. Thus the battle played an important role in the liberation of Belgium. Kalmthout was liberated by the Canadian army on October 8, 1944. Thanks to Canadian forces and the collaboration of a resistance movement of 600 dockers led by Colonel Eugene Colson, nicknamed 'Harry', most of the harbor installations remained untouched. The two statues at Heide-Kalmthout station are a Canadian soldier and Eugene Colson walking towards each other.
