The former Franciscan monastery of Sankt Ludwig is located in a landscaped forest area of the De Meinweg National Park in the hamlet of Vlodrop Station, north-east of Vlodrop. The monastery was built in the years 1905-1909 to a design by brother Th. Borren and Rector P. Wenzeslaus. The Franciscans had emigrated from Germany to the Netherlands because of the Kulturkampf. The complex, which consisted of a monastery and a school building with boarding school for 200 boys, and which also included a farm, was an almost completely self-sufficient institution. In 1979 the Franciscans left and in 1984 it became the property of the Maharishi European University Foundation. This foundation wants to demolish the monastery, but because it has now become a national monument, that will be less easy. The Citizens' Committee St. Ludwig Foundation fights for the preservation of the monastery and for the repair of the destruction that has been done in the meantime.
