The Montfort castle is currently partly ruin and partly a visitor center. It was built around 1260 by Hendrik van Gelre on a ridge in the watery Vlootbeekdal. Thanks to its location, the polygonal ground plan and thick natural stone walls, this most southern stronghold of the Duchy of Gelre was practically impregnable. During the Disaster Year of 1672, the French troops of King Louis XIV managed to blow up the castle. Parts of the castle were then inhabited until the twentieth century.
