Hembrug Museum

The Hembrug Museum tells the story of the arms and ammunition factory that was located here from the end of the 19th century to 2003. The site on the North Sea Canal and the estuary of the Zaan used to be the heart of the Defense Line of Amsterdam and the factory was intended to provide the Defense Line with ammunition in the event of a siege. Nowadays you can take guided tours where former employees show you their former work area and tell interesting anecdotes. In this way, the collection in the museum is brought to life in a characteristic way. In the past, you would find a vocational training course, a company doctor and a theater on the site of the factory to meet the needs of the employees of the factory. During the Second World War, the factory was looted and destroyed by the Germans. After the liberation, the factory switched to the production of agricultural tools, but also bicycles and children's toys. The factory closed in 2003 and nowadays you will find a creative business park of which the museum is part.
