In 1986, Stern founder Henri Nannen built a building for his collection of 20th-century art in his hometown of Emden. German Expressionism and New Objectivity painting form the heart of the collection, which includes works by Nolde, Macke and Kokoschka. In October 2000, the museum was expanded when the Munich gallery owner and collector Otto van de Loo donated his extensive collection to the Kunsthalle Emden.
