Right in the middle of the city is the Palace of the Welfen Kings, also known as the Residenzschloss. After its destruction, the facade has been completely restored with original architectural elements. The Schlossmuseum shows the turbulent history of the castle since its construction between 1833 and 1841. At the gates of the city is Richmond Castle, an outstanding example of late Baroque architecture. This palace was built in a beautiful location above the Oker, while the adjacent park is laid out in the style of a classic English landscape garden. The European Bird Sanctuary Riddagshausen also serves as a local recreation area and offers idyllically situated lakes and the natural countryside around the Cistercian Abbey.
