Jever Castle dates back to a late 14th century settlement. The castle got its fortified character mainly from the imposing tower, around which a square building was erected in the course of the 15th and 16th centuries. When Jever was assigned to the Duchy of Oldenburg in 1818, the castle was declared the secondary residence of the Dukes of Oldenburg and the science building, which no longer had any function, and the fortifications were demolished. The museum has been located in the castle since 1921 and presents collections on the cultural history, ethnology and archeology of the Jeverland.
