Around 1100, the Lord of Pamele founded the medieval town of Pamele along the right bank of the Scheldt. In 1593 it was absorbed by its large neighbor Oudenaarde. Barely four centuries of independent administration, however, left beautiful traces, with the church as the highlight. The first church was replaced by the current one in the 13th century. Due to the relatively short construction period (1235-1300), the building is a fine example of Scheldt Gothic.
