Ontvoeringsplein aan station Mechelen-Nekkerspoel
The Mechelen-Nekkerspoel station building is located on the Ontvoeringsplein. The square owes its disturbing name to the deportation at this site of so-called "work refusers" who were rounded up and taken away to work in Germany during the First World War. Sculptor Jef van Goolen was commissioned by the city council in 1921 to erect a 'monument of the deported people'.
