Huize Groeneweg
Huize Groeneweg (the former Alexian monastery Emmaus) is the only remaining monastery building in Gouda that is still almost complete. In 1395 the Brothers Alexians bought this building and in 1464 the chapel was added and the complex was further expanded. The Alexians lived in great poverty and depended on donations from the community. To make some money, the Alexians cared for and buried plague sufferers. Hundreds of skulls were found in the garden during the restoration of the monastery in 1982. Today the Alexian Monastery is an apartment complex.
