Stormvloedkering Hollandsche IJssel

After the flood disaster of 1953, a storm surge barrier was constructed in the Hollandsche IJssel. The Hollandsche IJssel is connected to the sea. During spring tide and heavy storms, the water from the Hollandsche IJssel cannot be discharged to the sea, resulting in a risk of flooding. In such situations, a slide of 80 meters wide is lowered, which completely closes off the Hollandsche IJssel. Normally the slide is up, so that shipping traffic can continue as usual.
