Hanseatic city

Hanzestad Zaltbommel

Long before the rise of the Hanseatic League, trade was important in Zaltbommel. In the 13th century the city was already an important trading city and in the 15th century it grew into an important city in the Hanseatic network. The Hanze was a partnership between Dutch and German cities to promote cooperation and to protect merchants. Until the beginning of the 17th century, the inhabitants of Zaltbommel were involved on a large scale in industry and trade. The city flourished during this time. The remains of this period of growth can still be found in the center of the city. The St. Martin's Church, the Maarten van Rossum House, the remains of the medieval city wall and many more sights are worth a visit if you want to imagine yourself in a bygone era. Do you prefer to stick to the current time? Then you can also go to the cozy center for a bite to eat or a drink.
