Hanseatic city
Hanzestad Deventer
Deventer is one of the five oldest cities in the Netherlands. Between 1000 and 1500 Deventer developed into a true trading center. This was partly due to the fact that the city joined the German Hanseatic League. This alliance was intended to promote trade between cities and to protect merchants. At the time, the city was an important port city on the IJssel. During the Middle Ages, Deventer attracted merchants from all over Europe to participate in the annual fairs in this city. The current historic city center was created during this period. Nowadays, Deventer is primarily a lively city with an authentic atmosphere and a beautiful green environment. In the center of the city you will find monumental buildings that are worthwhile. Here you will find the oldest stone house in the Netherlands in the Sandra Alley. In the middle of the city you will find the Brink, a long market square with trees, cozy terraces and monumental buildings around it
