Hanzestad Hattem
Hanseatic city

Hanzestad Hattem

Hattem is a small Hanseatic town on the northern edge of the Veluwe. At the end of the Middle Ages, this modest town joined the Hanseatic League. This alliance was intended to promote trade between different cities and to protect affiliated merchants from feudal lords. The Hanseatic League ensured that many cities grew into thriving trading cities. Within the Hanseatic League, the small town of Hattem was not so much, but the town nevertheless benefited from the Hanseatic League. The city grew through trade and eventually Hattem grew into an attraction for painters around the year 1900. Jan Voerman was one of those painters. His art can be admired in the Voerman Museum Hattem. In Hattem you will also find the Anton Pieck Museum with special etchings, drawings, oil paintings and much more. Finally, you will also find the Dutch Bakery Museum in Hattem, where you can learn more about the history of bread and pastries. Hattem is also surrounded by beautiful nature reserves and in the city itself you will find beautiful buildings from the Hanseatic era.
