Historical culture village

Leersum

Leersum is a small village at the foot of the Heuvelrug. On the steep northern side the village is surrounded by a continuous forest area, on the southern side are the lower land towards the Neder-Rijn. Leersum owes its location to the Darthuizerpoort. Here you can clearly see that the Heuvelrug was created in the Ice Age. The Leersumse Veld nature reserve was formed by melt water from the glacier. Now it is known as 'the quietest place in the Netherlands' and it is the breeding ground for various bird species. Partly due to its variable natural beauty, Leersum is a great stopping place for a walk or bike ride on the Heuvelrug. In addition to walking and cycling, Leersum organizes one of the region's most colorful events, the Flower Parade, an event held every year on the 3rd Saturday of August.
