Station Antwerpen

Antwerp Central Station is located in the center of Antwerp. The current building is Antwerp's third station building and was built between 1899 and 1905. The station was opened in 1905 by King Leopold II. The station building is made of stone and the platform roof is made of steel. The roof is inspired by the old station building of Lucerne and the Pantheon in Rome. In the middle of the twentieth century, the building was dilapidated. There were plans to demolish the station, but those plans were swept aside when the building was given the title of protected monument in 1975. Major restoration work was carried out from 1985. Various office spaces and staff areas were then built in the upper parts of the station, the steel was polished and everything was repainted. The station is the setting for numerous films and the station is also featured in several books.
