Gras- en Korenlei
The Graslei and Korenlei are two streets located on a medieval harbor in Ghent. On the right bank of the harbor you will find a unique row of historic buildings called the Graslei. Here you will find the Korenmetershuis, the Guildhuis of the Free Skipper and the Spijker, all with their own history. All buildings were erected here during the flourishing of Ghent's economy in the Middle Ages. The harbor flourished in the 11th century and the streets around the harbor became the center of the grain trade of Flanders at that time. At that time, Ghent had the exclusive right to import grain into Flanders. On the other side of the water is the Korenlei. Some buildings have been beautifully preserved and of others only the authentic facades remain. Behind that beautiful facade is often a modern hotel. The Graslei and Korenlei are located between the Grasbrug and the Sint-Michielsbrug.
