Kruispoort
The Kruispoort is one of the remaining city gates of Bruges. The gate was part of the second Bruges city wall that was built between 1297 and 1304. The first city gate had to be replaced in 1366. Philip van Artevelde destroyed the gate when he took Bruges in 1382 with the Gentenaars. The current city gate dates from the early 15th century. Only the main building remains of that gate. The two bridges and the front gate that used to be part of the city gate have not been preserved. On the city side, the gate has two octagonal corner towers. In the gate you will find all kinds of throwing holes to be able to pelt the enemy and gun holes to defend themselves well. Most of the interior of the gate has been preserved. Here you will find the original benches that were used by gatekeepers. Between 1830 and 1945 a weapons museum was located in this museum. It is unknown where the collection of this museum has gone.
