Church

Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk

The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk defines part of the cityscape of Bruges. It is therefore not surprising that this beautiful church is a real attraction for tourists. Around 875 a small church already stood on the site of the current Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk. In 1116 it became the main church of an independent parish and probably the church was therefore rebuilt. Construction of the current church started in 1230. At 115 meters, the tower of the church is the tallest structure in all of Bruges. The tower collapsed in 1163 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1270 and 1340. The spire was added in the 15th century and rebuilt in the 19th century. The apostle statues in the church are from the 17th century. The church is built entirely of brick. The church has become known mainly because Mary of Burgundy? buried there. In the church you will find a statue of Madonna and child by Michelangelo.
