Sint-Michielskerk

The Saint Michael's Church is one of the Seven Wonders of Leuven. These are seven special sights that were given this title in the seventeenth century. The baroque church was built between 1650 and 1671 as a Jesuit church after the example of the Il Ges? in Rome. It is one of the most special baroque churches in Europe. The church is so richly decorated to get people back to church at a time when fewer and fewer people found their way to the church. The Sint-Michielskerk was therefore built on the highest point in Leuven. You can already see the church from far outside Leuven. In the church you will find three tombs. The baptistery contains the bones of Leonardus Lessius, one of the most influential Jesuits in the Southern Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries. Among other things, he was an advisor to Archdukes Albert and Isabella. The other two gravestones belong to two sisters who provided funds to build the church.
