The 's Gravenhof is the oldest square in the historic Hanseatic city of Zutphen. This city is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. As protection against the Vikings, defensive walls and a castle were built and a moat was dug. During excavations at the 's Gravenhof remains of the old castle were found, such as pieces of wall and debris. On the basis of those excavations it could be determined that the castle was 12 by 54 meters in size. The square is now used as a parking lot and around the square you will find a few old buildings. For example, the old town hall is located on the square, the Walburgiskerk which dates from the 13th century, a shell dome from 1697 in which more than 10,000 shells have been processed, restaurant 't Schulten Hues and Eden Hotel Zutphen, which is located in a building from the 17th century. The police station was also located on this square for a long time.
