In 980 Groesbeek was briefly the center of the world. This region was part of the Holy Roman Empire and the young Emperor Otto II ruled it. Otto II was married to Theophanu, an exotic princess from distant and civilized Byzantium (modern Istanbul). In Groesbeek she gave birth to a son, heir to the throne Otto III.
