I02 - Stoomtimmerfabriek Wehl
Visit the website
In Wehl there is a monumental steam carpentry factory from 1909. The factory was built here during industrialization to saw wood for, for example, the Limburg coal mines. In these mines a lot of wood was used to support the mine galleries. The location of the factory was strategically chosen on the track, so that raw materials and the end product could be easily imported and exported. In addition to wood for companies, this factory also produced furniture. The factory and the adjacent house are built in the Transitional style with a mix of bricks, sand-lime bricks and concrete. The complex has hardly been affected by age, making it a rare example of an industrial sawmill from the early 20th century. From 1956 the factory was hardly used and since 1999 the building has been a protected national monument. During the Open Monuments Day you can take a look at the factory every year. The most special thing about the whole factory is the sawing machine from 1905 that is still functioning.
