Where the Hollandsch Diep crosses the Volkerak, there used to be a fortress called 'Ruigenhil'. Named after the rugged, swampy landscape. The Ruigenhil fortress was called Willemstad after William of Orange was murdered there in 1584. You can still hear stories of both place names here: from Willem and from rough. The well-preserved ramparts and city gates that used to serve to keep uninvited guests out are now wide open to enjoying guests.
