Fortified city
Vesting Nieuwpoort
Due to its favorable location on the Lek, the town of Nieuwpoort has had a lot to do with war and battle in its past. In the 17th century, this was the reason for the construction of fortifications, making the city part of a defense line around the large Dutch cities: the Old Dutch Water Line. the city could be flooded to stop enemy troops. The ramparts and canals of Nieuwpoort are still visible.
