Landgoed Overcingel

Johannes van Lier, receiver general of Drenthe, lived with his family in the Receivers House in the center of Assen. In 1777 he had the architect Abraham Martinus Sorg build a new mansion outside the city center, on the other side of the Oostersingel. The estate owes its name Overcingel to this location. Herman Hubert van Lier, grandson of the founder, inherited the estate in 1823 with his brother Johannes Henricus Petrus and became the sole owner after his death in 1824. He had the garden redesigned in the English landscape style by landscape architect Roodbaard. Notary Hendrik van Lier inherited his father's house in 1863. He was married to Jentien Carsten. They died childless, after which the house came into the hands of Hendrik Lels, the eldest son of Geesina Carsten, a niece of Jentien. For Hendrik, permission was obtained by Royal Decree in 1902 to use the name Van Lier Lels. Overcingel is still in the hands of the Van Lier Lels family. The estate is partly accessible.
