Kamp Erika (Ommen)
Just outside Ommen you will find Camp Erika in the middle of the woods. During the Second World War this was a penal camp where prisoners were taken to relieve the overcrowded prisons. The camp was used from June 22, 1942. The remote location of the camp allowed the guards to brutally mistreat prisoners without anyone knowing about it. Ultimately, more than 170 prisoners died here. At first mainly black traffickers were brought to the camp, but later people in hiding and resistance fighters also ended up here. Camp Erika was liberated on 11 April 1945. Today you will find here a cross and a memorial stone that commemorates the horrific events that took place here.
