Tourist landmark
Brusselpoort
The Brusselpoort is an impressive, massive building from the 13th century and is located in the middle of the ring road of Mechelen. The old city gate is the highest of twelve gates that were built as city walls. Originally the gate was therefore called 'Superior Gate'. Another gate, the 'Brusselse Poort', was also built during that period. When the old Brusselse Poort was demolished and the Nieuwe Steenweg to Brussels reached Mechelen, it was decided to rename the 'Overste Poort'. The building served, among other things, as a studio for Alfred Ost. Het Firmament has been located there since 2010, (t) Huis voor Figurentheater in Flanders. The Brusselpoort is not accessible to visitors.
