The Rijssens Museum is a city museum that depicts the special and rich history of Rijssen. Rijssen is a small, ancient city in Twente. Part of the exhibition is devoted to the former jute industry. This industry was enormously important to the Rijssen economy and society. The entire collection of the museum consists of site-specific historical objects and the like that are displayed in different rooms. Part of this collection is an art collection of national importance. The museum is located in the castle complex of the Havezate de Oosterhof. The Rijssens Museum once started under the name Oudheidkamer Riessen. The reason for the establishment of the Oudheidkamer was the realization of an extensive exhibition on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the city of Rijssen. The exhibition was held in 1948. There was such an enthusiastic response that a number of Rijssen residents decided to set up a foundation to start a permanent museum. The museum has been located at its current location since 1989.
